Why Think City Sucks Ass
by sAFETY on March 18th, 2008
Some of you might be aware of ‘Think City’, an organization that claims to promote ‘Ideas for a 21st Century Vancouver’ and, like I once did, you may regard them as a progressive group that promotes progressive policies for a livable Vancouver. Now I’ve discovered that I’m not the only one that’s incredibly pissed at their repeated auto-dialer pre-recorded messages telling me to go to their website and let “Sam Sullivan know what I think”.
Well, think city, after repeated attempts to get me off of your heinous list here’s that I think: I think your a bunch of hollow fakers claiming to represent what the city’s residents want, while employing techniques that every human being deplores. Telephone solicitors are bad enough, but your calls offer no way to be removed from the spam list (something I never signed up for in the first place), to engage in a real conversation if I choose to, or even give people a number to reach you at!
Your goals may be noble, but your techniques put you as low as a 411 scammer, and I now regard you just as poorly.
If you’re being harassed by these idiots, please call and leave them a message (that they won’t respond to) at 604.216.7246 or email them at hello@thinkcity.ca. If you’re from Think City and you’re reading this, I invite you to leave a comment below and try to justify yourself.
For the Organized Boozer

As much as I try to ignore Kitsilano, people still live there. And if people live somewhere, chances are they also like to drink there, which is where www.ontaptoday.com comes in. More
Big Movies, Big Screen, Big Effects, Small Price
by sAFETY on January 28th, 2008
Ever wonder how Scifi classics stand the test of time? Wonder no longer! Siggraph is holding a mini film-fest and screening some of the greatest VFX movies of all time on the big screen at the Vancouver International Film Centre. Highlights include the newly restored “Blade Runner: The Final Cut” (I just bought this for BluRay and it’s worthy of all the hype), TRON, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and even the original King Kong! A complete list of movies after the jump: More
6 ‘hoods, Many Lanterns
by sAFETY on December 19th, 2007
This Friday is the Winter Solstice and my friend Jen has pointed out that Christmas isn’t the only holiday with special events.
The ‘Secret Lantern Society’ is organizing a bunch of neighbourhood Lantern Festivals with jazz, drum circles, chanting, and even a little bluegrass. Areas include:
- West End
- Yaletown
- Granville Island
- Commercial Drive
- Chinatown
So if you’re a little tired of Christmas, but not tired of celebrations, check one out and let us know how it was in the comments.
Yaletown Apocalypse
by sAFETY on September 28th, 2007
I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the ramblings of lunatics. If not for their comedic value, these publishings, diatribes, announcements, and overheard conversations can offer a great window society through paranoid eyes.
If you’ve walked through Yaletown lately, you may have seen an announcement taped up on a light post like the one pictured. It seems that the Bible has prophesized space creatures coming down and warning us about the hole in the atmosphere. It’s interesting for sure, but I want to know why they messages are only in Yaletown? Is it because that’s where most of the hair-products that caused the ozone hole come from or perhaps because only the spaced out population there is likely to believe.

Vancouver’s REAL Underground Scene
by sAFETY on August 29th, 2007
There are all sorts of tunnel entrances, grates, and manholes that I pass every day and wonder 1.where they lead, and 2.how long it’ll be before they’re covered up by another condo development. While the answer to #2 is invariably ’soon’, the answer to #1 is a little more involved.
‘Urban Exploration’ is a pastime that has gotten more and more popular over the years and it involves exploring where you’re not supposed to. Abandoned buildings, underground drains, McBarges, etc. More
Unfortunately Named Drycleaner
by sAFETY on July 10th, 2007
I don’t know much about the dry-cleaning business, but I have used a few services over the years and the number one complaint is generally lost clothes. If I take something in to be cleaned and it’s gone when I return, I’m not going to use that company again.
With that in mind, I thought it was funny that one place decided this name for their dry cleaning operation. I assume it’s the name ‘Mia’ and not the acronym ‘M.I.A’ that inspired the moniker, but what’s the difference between this and naming a restaurant ‘The Vomit Cafe’, a housing development ‘Leaky Estates’, or a car repair shot ‘Dodgy Auto’.
Either way, I left my clothes there, we’ll see if they live up to their name.
Cuppa Joe’s - A secret spot in plain view
by sAFETY on April 3rd, 2007
Y’know those places that you pass by all the time, and you never give it a chance? Maybe the place’s exterior rubs you the wrong way, perhaps it reminds you of another place that you didn’t like, or maybe you just never have the time for it because a place you know and like is just around the corner.
For me, Cuppa Joe’s was the latter of these. It’s located within a block of many other wireless cafes cafes and I never gave it a chance until Soma closed suspended operations until they move to new digs. Located in the epicenter of Vancouver wireless Cafe culture at Main and Broadway, I’ve been walking by Cuppa Joe’s without giving it a second glance for as long as I can remember. I wish I’d been more open to this place though, as the coffee is exceptional (it’s so refreshing to see a barista who knows what he’s doing), the staff is very friendly, and the music is fantastic. Subeez - A Vancouver Institution, Now with Wifi!
by sAFETY on March 27th, 2007
The crazy gastronomic anomoly that is Subeez, a fixture on the Vancouver scene since time immemorial, now has wireless. Not that this institution doesn’t deserve a post of it’s own based on the food and atmosphere alone, it does, but it also helps that they’ve got free (ad driven) wifi.
In a hollowed out concrete block on the corner of Homer and Beatty, Subeez has been offering awesome food and awesome music for years, and although the value of the food has fallen over the years (quality stays the same, but the price has gone up), it’s still a great place to take outsiders. The decor can’t be described, the food is difficult to pinpoint, and the service staff is a mixed bag. All of these are positives.
